“What’s on your mind?” Corey asked as he took a seat and crossed one ankle over his knee, leaned back in his chair, and huffed out a sigh. That was a sign to me that he was exasperated and probably could do without what I was going to say.

“Corey, I’m not exactly sure how I want to start this conversation, but I’ll do my best not to take too much of your time.”

“Okay,” he said, more as a question than anything else.

“I feel that my talents and contributions to Wright-Way have not only been overlooked, but they’ve also been stolen, for lack of a better word, and used to further another individual’s career.”

“What specifically has caused you to feel this way?”

“Last night I watched my manager take full credit and a reward for work that she did not do. Work that was mine, from idea conception to implementation. Work that I slaved over for several weeks, ensuring that the end product was one that would be appreciated and valuable to the company. And last night I found out that my work was so appreciated and so valuable that the company is sending Janice on an all-expense-paid trip to Cancun to thank me.” I paused to give Corey a chance to respond. He was silent for several seconds, studying my face.

“I’m sorry to hear that you feel cheated, December. At the same time, ultimately, the responsibility of the project fell on Janice’s shoulders as the general manager. I hope that you understand that anytime you are working in a subordinate situation, the person functioning in the superior role does receive credit for the contributions of the employees he or she manages. My personal advice to you would be to carefully document your work to make sure that you receive credit for a job well done.”

I blinked back tears, not that I had expected him to jump up, rant and rave, and say, “Oh, I’m going to see what we can do about that! She won’t be going to Virginia Beach, let alone Mexico!” Well, maybe I had in my imagination.

“Now what I will do is talk to her,” Corey continued, “and uncover specifically what her level of involvement was throughout this entire project. I’m most concerned that if what you are saying is true, that it may cause a negative ripple in morale, not just where you are concerned, but also of the entire staff, creating an environment where everyone will think twice about taking on additional responsibilities or special projects.” He paused momentarily. “I also think that it is important that you share your views with Janice so she will realize the impact of her actions.”

Those were the words I was waiting to hear.
